HELPFUL THINGS, 2012-2014

A series of  signs with litanies of workplace complaints, all sourced from online confessional sites and transcribed through texting. Shown with a book and video compendium, and Column of Heaven, a sound sculpture of two stacks of box fans with a voice intoning a homophone dictionary.

Gallery installation of Helpful Things, at California College of the Arts MFA show, 2014. Lining the walls are multiple text-based signs commercially printed with bright colours and heavy text. Each sign contains a phrase that has been lifted from an online confessional site in which people complain about their jobs. The text has been read out loud by the artist and translated by Dragon dictate, so it is full of spelling and grammatical errors and words not in the original text.
